JAMA:Acupuncture found effective to PC6 and HT5 to treat chronic Stable Angina (CSA)

A research team from the Chengdu University of TCM just published there an intriguing study on JAMA Internal Medicine, that true acupuncture showed beneficial effect as an adjunctive treatment for Chronic Stable Angina (CSA).

In the 20-week randomized clinical trial with 404 patients carried out in 5 hospitals in China within 3 years. The subjects received acupuncture on the acupoints on the disease-affected meridian (DAM), receive acupuncture on the acupoints on the nonaffected meridian (NAM), receive sham acupuncture (SA), and received no acupuncture (wait-list [WL] group). All the subjects also received conventional antianginal therapies. Acupuncture interventions were performed 3 times weekly for 4 weeks for a total of 12 sessions.

Among the 4 groups, the frequency of angina attacks changed significantly at 16 weeks: a greater reduction of angina attacks was observed in the DAM group vs the NAM group (P < .001), in the DAM group vs the SA group (P < .001), and in the DAM group vs the WL group (P < .001).
